WRITING PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT
This agreement is entered into by Northwind Studio ("Author A") and Acme Co ("Author B") to collaborate on the writing project described below. Replace the sample details with the specifics of the work, target format, and expected delivery date before signing.
WORK
Working title
Co-authored work with the working title and format below.
SPLIT
50 / 50
Default authorship and revenue split, adjustable in writing.
DRAFT DUE
12 months
Target window from signing to first complete draft.
The Authors wish to co-create an original work and set out the terms under which they will contribute, own, and share the proceeds from it. Both Authors have the skills and availability to complete the work on the schedule agreed below. This agreement supersedes any prior verbal or written understanding on the same subject.

The collaboration runs across three phases so both Authors share a common view of how the work is created, revised, and taken to market.
PHASE 1 · OUTLINE AND OUTLINE APPROVAL
The Authors jointly develop the concept, characters or subject matter, structure, and chapter outline. Signed acceptance of the outline is required before drafting begins.
PHASE 2 · DRAFTING AND REVISION
Chapters are assigned by mutual agreement based on strengths and interests. Each Author revises the other's drafts through a shared document, with a weekly working session to resolve open questions.
PHASE 3 · SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION
The Authors agree together on agents, publishers, and self-publishing decisions. Contracts with third parties are only signed by both Authors, and all correspondence is copied to both parties.
Decision-making: substantive changes to the outline, title, or credit require written approval from both Authors. Deadlocks are resolved by mediation before either Author may seek to withdraw from the project.

Revenue from all uses of the work is shared as set out below after direct expenses agreed in writing are recovered. Sample splits illustrate the default position; adjust the figures on the fee table to match your arrangement.
| Item | Rate | Qty | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advance, per Author on signature of publishing contract | $5,000 | 1 | $5,000 |
| Royalty share, per Author | 50% | 1 | 50% |
| Subsidiary and translation rights, per Author | 50% | 1 | 50% |
| Item | Approval | Handling |
|---|---|---|
| Research, travel, editorial services | Written approval by both Authors | Deducted before profit split |
| Personal writing tools and time | Not shared | Borne by each Author |
| Agent and legal fees | Agreed per contract | Deducted before profit split |
Either Author may withdraw from active writing with 60 days' written notice. Contributions made up to that point remain co-owned, and the continuing Author may complete the work using them subject to the credit and revenue terms above. This agreement remains in force for the full copyright term of the work.

The Writing Partnership Agreement template is a five-page document for locking down co-authorship terms before drafting begins. It carries a work overview with stat cards, recitals, a three-phase collaboration process, a revenue split table, and an acceptance page with inputs and signatures.
It is intentionally simple: rename what needs renaming in Bonsai, list your actual work title and split, and set the advance. Merge fields handle both author details, and the last page collects the working title, start date, and both signatures.
Everything below comes pre-configured. Turn sections on or off, edit the copy, or add your own — Bonsai remembers your choices for next time.
Can I change the 50/50 split? Yes — every fee row, table cell, and signature block is fully editable in Bonsai.
Can I add a third co-author? Yes — add a signature column and update the split rows so shares sum to 100%.
Do merge fields auto-fill? Yes — Sender, Receiver, and Date pull from your client contact and the current date automatically.
