FREELANCE WRITER CONTRACT
Each article moves through three steps so the Client and Writer share a common view of the editorial workflow.
STEP 1 · BRIEF AND OUTLINE
The Client provides a written brief covering topic, angle, target audience, and any sources or interviews. The Writer returns an outline for approval before drafting, along with any clarifying questions.
STEP 2 · DRAFT AND REVISIONS
First draft delivered in the agreed format with sources cited. The engagement includes two rounds of revisions per article based on consolidated Client feedback returned within five business days.
STEP 3 · FINAL AND HANDOVER
Final article delivered ready for publication, along with an optional short summary and a set of headline and subhead options. Publishing and CMS entry are the Client's responsibility unless added in writing.
Not included: in-person interviews, transcription, illustration, CMS entry, and SEO strategy beyond basic keyword guidance. New scope can be added in writing at any time.

The Freelance Writer Contract template is a five-page document for putting a commissioning arrangement on paper before the first brief drops. It carries an engagement overview with stat cards, recitals, a three-step editorial process, a per-article fee table, and an acceptance page with inputs and signatures.
It is intentionally simple: rename what needs renaming in Bonsai, list your actual article count and word length, and set the per-article rate. Merge fields handle the writer and client details, and the last page collects the publication, start date, and both signatures.
Everything below comes pre-configured. Turn sections on or off, edit the copy, or add your own — Bonsai remembers your choices for next time.
Can I edit every section? Yes — every heading, paragraph, stat, table row, and signature block is fully editable in Bonsai.
Can I sell full rights instead of first serial? Yes — update the Rights and Byline paragraph to reflect a work-for-hire assignment and adjust the fee accordingly.
Do merge fields auto-fill? Yes — Sender, Receiver, and Date pull from your client contact and the current date automatically.
