Freelance Editing Contract

An agreement from Northwind Studio covering the editing engagement, level of edit, deliverables, and payment terms.

Parties and Overview

This agreement is entered into by Northwind Studio (the "Editor") and Acme Co (the "Author") for the editing engagement described below. Word count and level of edit are locked at the sample-edit stage.

Objectives

• Lock scope and voice through a paid sample edit.
• Deliver a clean, consistent, publication-ready manuscript.
• Flag structural and factual issues with clear queries.
• Keep the schedule predictable with fixed turnaround.

Scope and Deliverables

The engagement runs across three phases. Each closes with a written deliverable before the next begins.

What is included

• Sample edit and project style sheet
• Full copy edit with tracked changes and queries
• One clean-up pass after Author responses
• Short editorial letter with recurring-issue notes

Not included: developmental editing, proofreading of typeset pages, ghostwriting, and permissions clearance. Additional passes are billed at the per-word rate.

Fees and Payment

The engagement is a fixed-fee edit based on the sample-edit word count and level of edit. Overages are billed at the same per-word rate.

Payment Schedule

Invoices are due within 15 days. Word counts above the agreed figure are billed at the same per-word rate.

Acceptance

To proceed, complete the fields below and sign. This contract is valid for 30 days from the date on the cover.
